Common Sense

Those Who Seek Shall Find (2012)

When I was a child,
all the world just seemed
to unfold in my lap.
As a child,
impossibilities
didn’t matter to me.
As a child,
the only responsibility:
come home for dinner,
all day free.

When I was five,
I suddenly grew wild.
Man, my world was huge.
Each step would brighten whichever
path I walked
with my light-up shoes.
The only pressure on my shoulders
was my backpack full of books.

They said, “use your common sense.”
 "But what is that?”
They always said, “use your common sense.”
“but what is that?!”

I can tell you
about all my years
and everything I’ve seen here.
I bet you,
If this continues, the ones coming up
will be the best to come.
The best to come.

When I was a child,
you could surely find me
in the woods, in sand by sea.
Lived outside,
in my jungle I tried to hide.
Then they cut down my tree.
Did you lose sight
what it was like
at that height?
Look through those young ones’ eyes.

It was no surprise,
I had heard it all my life:
“Man, that time does fly.”
Was I too young to understand?
Some things you just can’t plan.
I’ve kept these treasures,
I’ve kept an eye on them.
& I hold them in my hand.

They said, “use your common sense.”
 "But what is that?”
They always said, “use your common sense.”
“but what is that?!”

I can tell you
about all my years
and everything I’ve seen here.
I bet you,
If this continues, the ones coming up
will be the best to come.
The best to come.
Oh take me back - -
